Side Plank

The side plank is holding the body in a straight line on one forearm and the side of the foot. It trains the obliques and the side of the hip, which keep the trunk from bending sideways under load.

How to

Bodyweight
  1. 1 Lie on one side, forearm down, feet stacked.
  2. 2 Lift the hips into a straight line.
  3. 3 Hold for the set time, then switch.

Tips

  • Stack the elbow under the shoulder.
  • Push the hips forward a little so the body forms one line.
  • Start with the bottom knee down if the full version is too hard.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the hips sink toward the floor.
  • Rolling the chest toward the floor.
  • Holding one side much longer than the other.
