Machine Chest Press
The machine chest press is a seated press on a guided path. The machine takes balance out of the lift, which makes it a good first chest exercise for beginners and a safe way for anyone to push sets close to failure.
How to
Machine- 1 Set the seat so handles sit at mid-chest.
- 2 Press forward until arms are nearly straight.
- 3 Return slowly without letting the weight rest.
Tips
- Set the seat so the handles line up with mid-chest before you add weight.
- Keep the upper back against the pad and the shoulder blades set.
- Machines let you push close to failure safely; use it on the last set.
Common mistakes
- Letting the stack touch down between reps, which removes the tension.
- Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears as you press.
- Setting the seat too low, so the handles start near the shoulders.

Questions
Is a machine press as good as free weights?
For building the chest, yes, when sets go close to failure. Free weights add balance work and give you a standard lift to measure.
Why does the weight differ between machines?
Each design has its own lever ratios and friction. Compare numbers only on the same machine.
Can I press one arm at a time?
If the handles move independently, yes; it helps even out a weaker side.
